This surprises me NOT AT ALL. Why? 1. We've seen the "secret underbelly" of teaching: the lazy or incompetent coworkers, the overpaid administrators, the idiotic bureaucracy, the ridiculous curriculum, the kids falling through the cracks. "Not ours!" 2. We as a rule probably have more confidence to try it. "Hey, if I can teach 25 first-graders, I sure should be able to handle my own one!"

Those two factors probably account for something.
