PARENTING TIP I: (SHORT VERSION) THE ISSUE OF ALLOWANCE...

You'll find the original, ranting, crazy post about our family here.

Now for the short version. :o)

THE RULES

There will be a list of chores posted on our refrigerator each week.
You will be paid for weekly chores on Saturday.

Rule #1:
IF you do a chore WITHOUT being asked to do it…
THEN you may put your initials in that "chore & day" box on the chore chart
ONLY AFTER rule #2 has been completed.

”Rule #2:
IF you complete a chore
THEN you must tell ME after you have done it.
IF you did not do it well
THEN you must re-do it before you put your initials in the box.
Rule #3:
IF I ASK you to do a chore
THEN you do NOT get paid for it.
Rule #4:
IF I ask you to do a chore and you roll your eyes, sigh deeply or ask ”Why” or give me ANY trouble at all…
THEN…YOU OWE ME THE MONEY FOR THAT CHORE AND YOU STILL HAVE TO DO THAT CHORE

Rule #5:
IF
rule number 4 takes effect and you have to pay me for a chore
THEN the full worth of that chore must be put, on the spot, into the “Parent Night Out Jar”.

Definition:
“Parent Night Out Jar” or PNO Jar:
Jar used to store “Rule #4” money.
(The jar should be placed in full view, in the home, for all to see.)

On the last Saturday of the month, Brian and I use the PNO Jar money to go out to dinner, coffee, a movie or buy whatever we feel like buying with that money.

I get a monthly date night out with my husband AND the kids don’t whine or roll their eyes when I ask them to do a chore. If they do, I just point to the jar and they’re out of the room without another word to get the money for the jar.

Life….Is Good...except that they aren't mouthy or rolling their eyes as often now so our jar is bare most of the time now. LOL

Shelly, I love this concept. I would be very interested in your chore list to compare to my own.

We have always been opposed to paying for chores (for us), but I really like this idea. I'll have to share it with my husband.

I would love to see your chart. My e-mail is on my profile.

Thanks!

This is great:):):). I love the idea of the "PNO" jar. Maybe that is what I will do with my jar money!

That sounds like a really good idea! I'm bookmarking this one!

I love this! It is so simple! I have 4 kids and it gets so tough making them be responsible that I just found it easier to do it myself. Well you should see the condition of our house...obviously I can't keep up with it all!
Thank you for such a simple yet effective way to get my kids to do chores!

Hi!

I love your chore idea. I was wondering, though, how each individual child know which chore to do. Is that listed somewhere else? There is the list of chores, the days of the week and the little boxes for initials, but how do each of your children know what is expected of them each day? Do the chores rotate daily?

Thanks,

Liz

Hi Liz,

That's a great question. We give them areas that are their daily responsibility. Our youngest, 4 and under, have to put the clothes that get kicked into the hall down the laundry chute. If they see clothes in the hall they just grab them and put them down the laundry chute. They also have to keep their room tidy.

Our middle child, 8 years old, is to take out the trash daily. Our 11 year old switches the clothes from the washer to the dryer and brings the clean clothes upstairs for me to fold and put away. Our eldest son, 16 is to load and unload the dishwasher and keep the kitchen counters wiped down.

If they do these things without being asked throughout the day they get paid. If I have to ask, they do not get paid.

They can also pick whatever chore they want off the chore chart and do them for money. Sometimes the boys bargain with their brothers to switch out chores and what-not. It's funny.

Thank you for the question. :o)

HI,

Would it be possible to get your list on email?

I want that list also. And how much do you pay for each chore? We've been discussing this for a while.
